Auction: ‘(Some) Penises I Have Known’ by Kate Kretz (eBay.com)
Nov 10th, 2024 by Viviane
Artist Kate Kretz is getting married soon, and wants to get the “(Some) Penises I Have Known” sculpture out of her studio.
The sculpture, made is 2000, is hand-whittled and painted, and measures 9 x 13 x 4″. The sculpture features 5 “figures”, each one laden with symbols representing each lover’s specific characteristics and idiosyncrasies. The winner of this auction will also receive a signed narrative and key for all of the symbols hidden in the sculpture.
Kretz’s work has been favorably reviewed by The Boston Globe, The Miami Herald, The Atlanta Constitution, ArtPapers and Surface Design Magazine. She will be featured in the Spring issue of Pistil magazine. She is represented by Chelsea Galleria in Miami. Critical reviews and resume may be seen at www.katekretz.com. Her most recent exhibition, “Grace and Shame”, at the Frost Museum in Miami, featured a catalog with an essay by Jonathan Goodman. In it, he writes, ” The strong-handed approach of Kretz results in a particularly interesting reading of her art, in which feelings….compel the viewer toward a spiritual recognition of the artist’s complex, often moving energies - even when the subject matter is provocative. The emotional forthrightness of Kretz’s aesthetic - one of her more risque statements is a group of phalluses entitled ‘(Some) Penises I Have Known’ - enables the artist to move beyond feeling for its own sake, providing the viewer with a wickedly funny reading of gender conditions.”
The medium is acrylic on pine and the sculpture is in excellent original condition…. no scratches or dents. It has been varnished, and there are a few drips in the varnish upon close inspection.
I have had many offers over the years to buy this piece, and I have held on to it because it is a somewhat personal work. As I will be getting married in the near future, it is time to send it out into the universe… Please contact me with any questions.
