Happy birthday, Susan!

Happy birthday, Susan Mernit! And many more.

I think it started when Susan found Jefferson, or perhaps with a comment. I was reading her blog because one of the techorati suggested I read it. And independently, she started reading one of my vanilla blogs. Then she wrote and said, “we should meet, yes? We have many things in common.” Little did we know!

Sometime last year, I started introducing her by saying, ’she was one of our first champions.” She talked about the sex bloggers, identity and privacy, at Gnomedex, of all places (Figleaf was there).

Thanks to many tech tools (IM, Flickr, Twitter), we can share what’s going on in each other’s lives. I only wish I could have been part of the 5 day celebration that is her birthday.

Um.

Does Isabella Rossellini have an insect sex fetish? Probably not, but she sure likes talking about their mating habits. You know, for educational purposes. Check out the following:

PARK CITY, UTAH — Among the lurid tales of sex and violence that haunt the Sundance Film Festival screens, there are few more gruesome and titillating than those of Green Porno, a series of short films made by Isabella Rossellini and her Canadian collaborators. The films, in which Rossellini dresses up as bugs, worms and snails, and simultaneously describes and demonstrates their mating behaviour, start out mildly enough. The actress with the round, angelic movie-star face begins speaking directly to the camera: “If I were a dragon fly, I would have compound eyes … ”

An instant later, the compound eyes appear on her face. Soon, she’s describing and demonstrating how she would take her clasping organs and grab her female partner: “I would clean her vagina to make sure she would only have my babies …If I were a firefly, I would light up my ass at night and I would fly here and I would fly there …”

Title: Best Women’s Erotica 2009
Editor: Violet Blue
Publisher: Cleis Press
Deadline: May 1st, 2008

Please note: Publisher has final right of refusal on all submissions. Payment is upon publication, plus 2 copies of the book; pub date is November 2008.

Best Women’s Erotica is a legendary and groundbreaking yearly series, and is the best-selling women’s erotica collection, period. Every year BWE raises the bar for explicit erotica written by and for women, penned by the most exciting female authors, from around the world.

This edition (BWE 2009) is selected and edited by Violet Blue. In this edition, we are looking for fictional stories that seek to push the boundaries of female sexuality, present realistic fantasies and situations, and break taboos. The sex acts depicted must be explicit and realistic in detail. A strong focus on character, predicament, and compelling situations is desired — smart, literate erotic fiction. The desired orientation within the main sexual element of the stories is primarily heterosexual, yet bisexuality and lesbian encounters are also encouraged. The primary focus of sexual activity must be on the female experience; female pleasure is the main element. A playful, clever approach is welcome, as are intense scenarios.

Both editions of BWE 2006 and BWE ‘07 won the Independent Publisher award for Best Erotica Book. Both BWE ‘06, ‘07 (and just-released ‘08) edited by Violet Blue are very different from past editions — please read a few stories from either book or the introductions for examples of tone. Dark themes (such as breakup, jealousy, infidelity and death) must be exceptional in content for acceptance and are *least* desired. Do not send sci-fi, poetry or fantasy fiction.

Established authors and newcomers alike are welcome.

Desired themes include: Women’s sexual fantasies and experiences of all kinds, such as taboo sex acts, fantasy scenarios (real or imagined), bondage, fetish, male anal penetration (such as strap-on play), first-time experiences, light S/M, exhibitionism, power-play, voyeurism, public sex, seduction, role-play, spontaneous sex, spanking, erotic punishment, sexual surprise, emotional honesty, desire, longing, lust, passion, female fierceness, power (and power struggles), deviousness, meaning, themes that involve the Internet and technology, and sublime humor. Above all, include explicit sex.

Paste your pieces into emails and send to: cleisbook at gmail.com

Editor’s notes: If you send an attachment, I will delete your email immediately. I am not accepting paper submissions. Only three submissions per author. Word count: 2500 to 4500 words is the desired range. You *must* include your name, a short bio, mailing address and main contact email address with your submission. No simultaneous submissions (you will be disqualified with no hesitation if you submit it to multiple publications), and no reprints. Excerpts from already-published, full-length books will be considered. Authors must be female; sorry, no male authors writing under pseudonym. Because of the volume of submissions last year (literally hundreds), I likely won’t be able to respond to your submissions until late May. Please only use the cleisbook at gmail.com address for correspondence about this book. I appreciate your patience in advance!

Kicked Out is an anthology, which chronicles the experiences of former queer youth and current queer youth who were forced to leave home as minors because of their sexuality and/or gender identity.

Kicked Out tells our collective stories of survival, weaving together descriptions of abuse, and homelessness with poignant accounts of the ways in which the queer community offered sanctuary, and the power and importance of creating our own chosen families etc.

Kicked Out offers advice and wisdom to the queer youth of today from former queer youth who have survived. Additionally, it provides the opportunity for readers to get a glimpse into the world of those queer youth who as a result of circumstance have had to leave home, while simultaneously shattering the stereotypes of who queer youth are, and what they have the potential to become.

Kicked Out will explore the diversity of our experiences across lines of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and geographic region celebrating our differences, and showcases the ways in which they have contributed to our unique experiences.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

Audacia Ray & $pread

I’ve made a big, weird decision that I’m still getting used to, but the cogs are in motion and it is happening. Effective with the spring issue and the start of $pread’s fourth year in print, I’ve decided that I will no longer be the executive editor of the magazine, nor will I be directly involved in the writing, editing and production of the magazine.

It’s taken me several months to let go, to really make the clear decision that my time at $pread has come to a close. But it has, and it’s time for me to move on.

Amber has written recently about activism and burn out and feeling like great things can’t be accomplished. This is kinda-sorta-notreally what I’m going through. I firmly and solidly believe that great things can be accomplished - and I believe that $pread can accomplish great things, and so can I. I am, however, feeling burnt out from three years of being an executive editor. Oh, I forgot one very important word: VOLUNTEER. Yes, it’s true - $pread is run entirely by a staff of devoted, passionate volunteers. And that takes a lot out of a person, especially after three years - three years in which I’ve started to make it as a writer and an editor in my own (paid) right.

In the future -which is to say, like, tomorrow- I will continue to work on sex work issues. I’m definitely not abandoning that part of my work, it just has to take different forms. Instead of working very specifically and separately within the sex worker communities on these issues, I want to fold them into the grander work I’m doing - like what I did with my book, writing about sexuality and sex work issues side-by-side. I have some stuff brewing that I don’t want to write about publicly and get it all jinxed, but we’ll see how everything develops over the next few months.

In the meantime, I’ll also be figuring out other ways of supporting $pread and the folks involved with the magazine, through other kinds of advocacy and hell-raising. We’ll see how it all pans out, and I’ll certainly be writing about it all as I figure it out.

And folks, this also means that $pread is looking for new contributors and people to work on editorial projects. We (they? - wow, that’s going to take some getting used to) aren’t ready to hire a full-on editor, but there is that need and opportunity once you prove your salt. Here’s the call, feel free to pass it on to anyone who might be interested:

$pread Magazine - an award-winning independent publication by and for people in the sex industry, is seeking past and current porn actors, phone sex operators, escorts, prostitutes, streetworkers, dommes, webcam workers, strippers / dancers, massage parlor workers, etc to submit work to our magazine.

broadest aim is to be an informative and shameless voice of people who’ve worked in the sex industry.

STAFF-TRACK POSITIONS
We are currently looking for qualified people to become columnists / section editors, and prefer to work with people on a single writing piece first, before consideration for a longer-term assignment.

WRITING
We are seeking writers [editorial experience a bonus] to submit creative writing, pitch articles and write reviews and contribute to our various sections.

SECTIONS: We are always looking for writing for include:

-ARTICLES: We also welcome pitches for longer articles or interviews with people who work in or around the sex industry.

-ART: We welcome submissions of illustrations and photographs for individual usage and photo essays.

Tess Urban Gypsy

Silence has no place in the bedroom - unless you’re gagged!

Join us for this fun and risqué evening. We’ll start with a one hour class and learn a little something about the art of “sexy” talk. After that we’ll open up the floor to Q & A and comments from the audience.

This multi sensory evening will inspire you to be more erotic and adventurous. After the class we’ll have time to hang out for the rest of the evening and perhaps practice what we’ve just learned.

Sounds a little naughty to me :o)

Having hotter, sexier sex doesn’t require you to spend a fortune on an arsenal of sex toys and accessories. Mind blowing sex can be achieved by using what your already possess. This course will teach you how to use your voice, your imagination, and your erotic vocabulary to add fun and spice to the bedroom or the backseat.

If you don’t think you have an erotic vocabulary, you will by the time you leave. From using your cell phone to send messages that leave you breathless with anticipation to looking into your lover’s eyes as you relate just how good that feels, you’ll learn how to go at your own pace as you release your inner slut or stud.

Tess Danesi is a writer and kinkster who believes dirty talk isn’t about imitating porn star speak, unless that really appeals to you, but about gaining the confidence to say all those things you think, feel and desire. From moans and groans, to long sentences detailing what you want now, good dirty talk is about being authentic.

…But we’re still far from living in a sex-positive culture. There hasn’t been any more research on female ejaculation than there was when I wrote my first column about it in 1999. Abstinence-only sex education continues to get more funding and support than other programs. Right-wing hypocrites continue to get caught with their pants down, sending inappropriate IMs or making moves in bathroom stalls. Lame celebrity-sex tapes have become more popular than big-budget porn features. People who practice BDSM, polyamory, and other alternative sexualities are still demonized and misrepresented. Meatholes.com still gets more traffic than planned parenthood.org. There are folks still writing to me every day that are struggling with confusion, disempowerment, shame, guilt, and a lack of knowledge about their sexual desires, fantasies, and identities.
