pointlogotype204852 Point Foundation Scholarships for bisexual students

pointfoundation.org

[email reprinted with permission; via the Livejournal bisexual community]

Hi, everyone,
For all you students and friends of students out there, I wanted to let you know about an incredible scholarship opportunity. The Point Foundation is the national LGBT scholarship organization, and they do amazing work. They give financial and other types of support to LGBT scholars from around the country — in fact, I wouldn’t be in school right now without their help.

If you are currently a grad student or an undergrad, or are planning to enter school next year, (or if you know someone in any of those categories), consider applying for a Point Foundation scholarship. They are especially looking to reach out to bisexual students, and have asked me to help spread the word in the bi community.

There are a number of sexual-orientation-based scholarships out there — but most are only for gays and lesbians. Bisexuals are often excluded from being able to apply. But Point is different. Point is one of the few that actually includes bisexuals, too! That’s really important, especially considering that bisexuals tend to make less money than gays and lesbians — many of us need all the financial help we can get to make it through school.

If you want to apply for a Point Foundation scholarship, visit www.pointfoundation.org. The application form is available starting December 12th. If you have any questions about the application process, feel free to ask me, as a Point Scholar. I’m happy to help out.

Please forward this message to any bisexual students (and gay, lesbian, and/or trans students, too). Thanks!

Cheers,
Amy Andre

Hello!

My name is Carmen Machado, and I’m a filmmaker in Washington, DC. I am currently producing a short segment of a documentary (working title: “AmBIguous Dating”) on bisexual dating. The segment is being directed by filmmaker Giovanna Chesler (her website can be found here).

As two bisexual women who are also navigating the world of dating, we are looking for stories. Your stories. Stories of bisexuals and their experiences in the dating world, and about problems that are unique to the bisexual dating scene.

Have you gone on a date and not been sure that it was actually a date? Have you ever revealed your bisexuality to your date, only to be met with antagonism? In other words, how does your sexuality make dating more complicated or difficult? Or does it at all?

We want stories of all kinds. Funny stories, tragic stories, heartbreakingly lovely stories. This is open to both bisexual men and bisexual women of all ages. Your story could have been about last week’s date fiasco, or one that occurred twenty years ago.

(Please note: the scope of this piece is limited to bisexual dating, not bisexual relationships.)

If you’re located in DC, and we choose one of your stories, we will possibly be conducting camera interviews (though if you want your story to be anonymous, that’s not a problem in the slightest). If you’re not located in this area – send your stories anyway! If we choose to use your story, we will contact you in order to have you fill out a standard release form (which gives us permission to use your story/interview). Additionally, if your story is chosen, we will send out an email with updates on where the film is being shown.

If you think you have a story for us, send it our way (along with any questions that you might have). Put the story in the body of an email and send it to carmen.machado AT gmail DOT com. Please put “AmBIguous Dating” somewhere in the subject line.

Additionally, if you feel like you know someone who has a story to tell, by all means, forward this information to them. Feel free to repost it in other communities and blogs. Spread the word! I can’t wait to hear what you all have to say.

Thank you so much. icon smile AmBIguous Dating Documentary

Feministing has a lengthy interview with Jennifer Baumgardner, author of Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics:

With Look Both Ways, I wanted to talk about bisexuality and younger feminists–and the phenomenon of younger women, ostensibly straight, dating women that I didn’t see so openly replicated among men. More than that, though, I didn’t really feel equipped to deal with male bisexuality. I think the best insights will come from a male bisexual writer, and I felt less interested. Since the book came out, though, I have been surprised, once again, by how many men have bought the book, or shown up at readings. The main generalization I can make there is that there is not as much culture flexibility and acceptance around male bisexuality. Two men in a straight bar kissing is grounds for a gay-bashing; two women kissing in a straight bar is just another Friday night. That’s because men’s sexuality is taken very seriously and seen as not a put-on, whereas women’s sexuality (even with one another) is often written off as being “for men.”

Martin and I go to a party for my bisexual support group. It’s a party in which we all perform: I play guitar and sing, and then read from my Penthouse Forum porn column, and others read poetry, perform music, or read their own work. At the end of the evening they ask me to keep on singing and playing. We sing and play Patty Griffin’s “Making Pies,” James Taylor’s “You Can Close Your Eyes,” The Stones’ “Wild Horses,” and Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” My friend Peter comes up to us. He’s got two of his women friends with him, our friend Adrianna and then a lovely new one: Lynn: gorgeous, with long dark hair, healthy, slim, hourglass body. Everyone wants to play. Peter kisses Martin on the mouth. I watch their tongues entwine. After all, it’s a bisexual party, right?

Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics

By Jennifer Baumgardner
Farrar, Straus and Giroux · $24.00

Cringing is often a sign of unfinished political business,” according to feminist author Jennifer Baumgardner.

She should know. Since 2002, Baumgardner has been spearheading the confessional “I had an abortion” campaign—most recently captured in the documentary film Speak Out: I Had an Abortion (www.speakoutfilms.com)—and in her new book, Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics, she’s tackling a topic that makes both straights and gays wince: the explosion of young women experimenting with bisexuality.

“The label bi sounds bad,” writes Baumgardner, “because at least in some ways, bisexuals are an unliberated, invisible and disparaged social group.” And yet, she notes, according to Alfred Kinsey’s famous studies (and a more informal survey of Nerve.com personals), more than 30 percent of women have had or seek same-sex encounters. In the past decade, they have become nearly de rigueur on liberal arts campuses, inspiring the disparaging acronym “LUG” (Lesbian Until Graduation). Why? (more…0

Sarah Aswell tracks down the duclod man:

As early as 1992, students at Grinnell College, a small liberal arts school in Iowa, began receiving strange, anonymous letters in the mail. The letters contained homemade greeting cards with crudely drawn pictures—men crawling on the ground, toilets and trash cans, twin closet doors—and jokes that didn’t make any sense. Q: What would a duclod like about the land of the giants? A: Standing in two closets without touching either knob.

In one mysterious letter the sender defined the made-up word duclod as the fusion of two words, dual and closeted, meaning a person who hides his or her sexuality from both gay and straight people. Another letter described the duclod as “bisexual, homophobic, heterophobic, confused.”

The letters were always sent in groups, from four to seven cards reported at a time. They were always postmarked from different, seemingly random parts of the country and always sent during school breaks. Mostly, the letters targeted gay and bisexual seniors. Sometimes they were sent to the student’s school address; sometimes home, possibly in an effort to out the student to his or her parents.

That’s all anyone knew for 14 years. (more…)

Deeply weird. Shit, I’m having a Peter Straub moment.

Deadline extended until May 31st!

Gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer men’s gender identities often exist somewhere outside the traditional categories of “masculine” and “feminine.” Sissies, drag queens, and leather daddies alike play with gender in a way that cannot be accounted for in traditional understandings of maleness. This collection — part blog, part anthology, part audiobook — aims to shatter traditional understandings of maleness and point towards a new understanding of how queerness and gender intersect.

BEYOND MASCULINITY is looking for contributions in four key areas. Contributors should not feel bound by these categories – they should rather be seen as potential prompts:

* Identity Intersections: How do race, ability, class, and other kinds of identities and experiences intersect with gender and queerness — and how do these intersections complicate our relationship to traditional understandings of “maleness?”

* Feminism, Gender, and Politics: How can feminism inform our understanding of queer male gender? Can queer men be feminists? How can we use our queerness as a political tool? What does male privilege look like for queer men?

* Bodies, Desire, and Pleasure: What kinds of male bodies are desired? Fetishized? Where does sexual desire intersect with queer gender and how are these politics mapped out on our bodies?

* Queer Male Communities: How are our identities produced through our communities? How do the gender norms and politics of gay/bi/trans/queer male communities both liberate and constrain us?

We’re looking for queer male writers to step up and contribute their thoughts to this online project. This is not your typical bookstore anthology. It will be only available online – and it will be completely free of charge to the public. Wih its unique implementation of media, this anthology aims to change the way queer non-fiction is done.

lundin Gay teens coming Out Earlier to Peers and Family (USA Today)

Kate Haigh, 18, a high school senior in St. Paul, recalls attending her first meeting at the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance club when she was in the ninth grade. “I said, ‘My name is Kate, and I’m a lesbian.’ It was so liberating. I felt like something huge had been lifted off my shoulders, and finally I had people to talk to.”

Zach Lundin, 16, has brought boyfriends to several dances at his high school in suburban Seattle.

Vance Smith wanted to start a club to support gay students at his rural Colorado school but says administrators balked. At age 15, Vance contacted a New York advocacy group that sent school officials a letter about students’ legal rights. Now 17, Smith has his club.

Gay teenagers are “coming out” earlier than ever, and many feel better about themselves than earlier generations of gays, youth leaders and researchers say. The change is happening in the wake of opinion polls that show growing acceptance of gays, more supportive adults and positive gay role models in popular media.

“In my generation, you definitely didn’t come out in high school. You had to move away from home to be gay,” says Kevin Jennings, 43, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, a national group that promotes a positive school climate for gay children. “Now so many are out while they’re still at home. They’re more vocal than we were.”
