Film Comment Selects: Exterminating Angels, Feb. 14 & 17

Jan 25th, 2025 by Viviane

Jean Claude Brisseau’s Exterminating Angels will be shown as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Centers Film Comment Selects series:

“A successful filmmaker auditions a number of nubile young actresses for his next project, an earnest investigation of the ‘taboos of female pleasure’ and the sensual mysteries of the female orgasm. Much graphic masturbation (but no intercourse) ensues, in a variety of settings, punctuated by brief, Orphée-style radio transmissions of cryptic free-associative poetry . . . The most bemusing and fearless film in the [Cannes 2006] festival – and one of the best.”—Gavin Smith FC Jul/Aug 06

Glad to see the Pretentious Collection– oops, I mean the Criterion Collection– will have some new bombastic, boring and pretentious foreign films now that the French New Wave and Italian Post-Neo-Realism have dried up.

I’m glad to see sex films trying to be something other than porn, but why are they all either boring or pretentious? Makes “Short Bus” all the more remarkable, because it made good points about humans AND was quite erotic and explicit.

And that’s saying something considering its homoerotic content and this very straight, middle-aged male.

Since when does the Criterion Collection have anything to do with the FSLC and Film Comment Magazine? You are mistaken.
