Mom bored by daughter’s alternative lifestyle

A few cats, a kid, a man-woman-man love triangle and a grandma. Put them all in one house and most people would sense the makings of a fascinating reality show.
But not Mary Atkins. Oh no, this grandmother couldn’t be more bored with the arrangement.
The 65-year-old Hayward woman lives with her daughter, Dawn Atkins, and Dawn’s husbands, Troy McKee and Lon Sarver. Troy’s 9-year-old son also lives there and considers all three members of the triad to be his parents.
Big deal, Mary Atkins says.
“People hear about this (triad) and they’re always expecting wild pagan rituals,” she said. “I’d like to say there’s a bunch of weird things going on, but it’s so traditional that it’s pitiful. They get up and go to work and come home and eat dinner like everybody else.”
The “big excitement,” according to Atkins, is when the trio goes out to dinner or buys concert tickets. “It’s the same old same old,” she said.
Dawn Atkins overheard this statement and gave her mom an amused scowl. The elder Atkins was undeterred.
“I’m sorry Dawn, but it is kind of boring,” she said.
“She doesn’t think it’s boring,” she added in jest. “I think Dawn should have had 10 husbands — she’s very high maintenance.”
